Every comparison of OMR apps written by an OMR company ends the same way, so let us be upfront: this one is written by ScanScore, and it ends with ScanScore. What we can promise is that it is fair about where other tools are better, uses their own published prices, and tells you plainly when ScanScore is the wrong choice for you.
We compared the tools teachers most often weigh up — ScanScore, ZipGrade, GradeCam, Gradescope, desktop OMR software and dedicated OMR machines — on the things that decide whether a tool survives a real term of use.
What actually matters when choosing
- The real price at your volume. Not the headline price — the price once you scan every class, every week, for a year.
- Sheet capacity. Can one sheet hold your longest test? A 100-question mock and a five-option paper rule out a lot of tools.
- Marking rules. Negative marking as a fraction, different marks per question and decimal scores are routine in Indian exams and rare in apps built elsewhere.
- Offline and privacy. Does it work in a hall with no signal, and do students’ answers leave the phone?
- Hardware. Phone, webcam, document scanner or a dedicated machine?
- Everything around the scan. Writing the paper, class lists, reports, parents. The scan is ten seconds of a much longer job.

Prices are as published on ZipGrade’s and Remark’s own pricing pages and, for GradeCam, as listed on software directories, checked in October 2026. A dash means we could not confirm the feature from the vendor’s public material — not that it is definitely missing. Check current details before you buy anything.
ZipGrade
ZipGrade is the best-known phone grading app and deserves its reputation. It runs on iPhone and Android, works offline, prints on an ordinary printer, and its paid plan is genuinely cheap at $6.99 a year with no automatic renewal.
Its limits show up with longer and Indian-style papers. The free plan stops at 100 papers a month — one weekly test for three sections uses that up in the first week. Answer forms come in 20, 50 and 100 questions, so a 120-question mock does not fit one sheet. And it is a scanner only: it does not write the question paper or shuffle it into sets.
GradeCam
GradeCam reads sheets through a webcam or document camera at the teacher’s desk and is widely used in American schools, with school- and district-wide accounts alongside the individual plans. Its free tier is limited to ten-question keys, and the individual paid plan is listed at around $150 a year. If your school already runs on it, it is a solid tool. For a teacher in India buying for themselves, the price and the US-centred workflow are hard to justify.
Gradescope
Gradescope is built for universities: sheets are scanned in bulk on a document scanner, uploaded, and marked in the browser alongside written answers. It is sold through institution-wide licences on a quote. Brilliant for a university course with written problems; overkill — and out of reach — for a school teacher with a weekly MCQ test.
Desktop OMR software and OMR machines
Desktop packages such as Remark Office OMR read sheets that have been through an image scanner; Remark lists at $1,295 per Windows PC. Dedicated OMR machines in India cost roughly ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000, usually need proprietary pre-printed sheets, and come with an annual maintenance contract. Both are fast and very accurate at scale. Both make sense for an examination board or a university exam cell processing tens of thousands of sheets with an audit trail. Our guide to OMR software in India works through where that line falls.
Where ScanScore is the better choice
- You test often. Scanning is free with no cap, so the hundredth sheet of the month costs the same as the first: nothing. Our article on why the scanning can stay free explains the mechanism.
- Your papers are long or Indian-style. 150 questions on one A4 sheet, five options when you need them, negative marking as ¼ or ⅓ or a fixed number, marks like 2.5 a question, and scores that keep their decimals.
- You also write the paper. The MCQ generator writes a paper for your board, class and chapters, then turns it into an exam with a matching sheet. No other tool here does both halves.
- You worry about copying. Set A to D papers with shuffled questions and options, each marked against its own key.
- Student data must stay put. Everything happens on the phone; nothing is uploaded unless you switch on backup.
- You want the whole loop in one place. Class lists, attendance, progress reports, WhatsApp results and — on Pro — a web dashboard, parent access and online tests.
Where another tool is the better choice
Which one to pick
Teacher or coaching centre with an Android phone
ScanScore. Nothing to pay for scanning, the longest sheet, Indian marking rules, and the paper writer when you want it.
iPhone only
ZipGrade, and keep its 100-question form limit in mind.
US school district or university
Whatever your institution licenses — GradeCam or Gradescope, typically.
Examination board, 50,000+ sheets a year
Desktop OMR software with a scanner, or a dedicated OMR machine.
Comparisons only go so far. Because ScanScore needs no account and costs nothing to scan, the quickest way to decide is to print one sheet and scan it — you will know in ten minutes whether it fits the way you teach.
