Many teachers say “Scantron” the way people say “Xerox”: for any machine-marked bubble sheet. Scantron-style marking is a good idea held back by its logistics. The forms are pre-printed, the reading needs a dedicated scanner, and that scanner is usually in one room that everyone queues for.
You can get the same result with a phone and a printer. This guide covers what changes, what stays the same, and when a machine is still the better answer.
What changes when the phone is the scanner
| Machine and pre-printed forms | ScanScore on a phone | |
|---|---|---|
| Answer sheets | Bought, pre-printed | Printed by you on plain A4 |
| Reader | A scanning machine | Your phone camera |
| Where you mark | Where the machine is | Anywhere, offline |
| Custom question count | Whatever the form allows | Up to 200 per sheet |
| School name on sheet | Usually not | Yes |
| Scan limit | None, but you buy forms | None |
What stays the same
- Students still fill circles, so the exam feels the same to them.
- You still get a score per student and a per-question picture of the class.
- You still keep a paper record of every answer sheet.
- Negative marking and different marks per question still work.
Switching: a practical plan
- Run one low-stakes quiz on ScanScore alongside your normal marking and compare the scores.
- Check the printer. Print at 100% scale, black ink, on plain paper, and confirm the black frame is fully on the page.
- Set up your class list so roll numbers turn into names on the results.
- Move your next unit test across once you trust the process.
Details on printing are in how to create an OMR sheet on A4.
When a machine is still better
Be honest about the cases where a phone is not the right tool:
- Your institution already owns a scanning machine and the forms, and the process works.
- You need to read tens of thousands of sheets a day in one centre.
- An official exam requires a specific accredited form.
For a school, a tutorial centre or an individual teacher, none of those usually apply. The longer comparison is in phone versus OMR machine.
The cost arithmetic
Count what you spend now: forms per student per test, multiplied by tests per year, multiplied by students. Then add the machine, its servicing and the time you spend queuing for it. ScanScore replaces the forms with paper you print yourself and the machine with a phone you already own. Marking itself costs nothing and has no limit, so the result is your own sum, not a promise.
