The phone in most teachers’ pockets is not a flagship. It is a two- or three-year-old mid-range or budget Android that has seen a lot of use. A good OMR scanner should be built for that phone, not for a review unit.

Here is what ScanScore actually needs from your hardware, how to get the best out of a modest camera, and what to do when things go wrong.

What you need

  • Android 7.0 or newer.
  • A working rear camera that can focus. Megapixel counts matter far less than a clean lens.
  • A bit of free storage for the app and, if you keep them, photos of scanned sheets.
  • No internet while marking.

Bubble reading is image processing. A bubble is a large dark shape compared with the detail a camera can capture, so even an inexpensive sensor sees more than it needs. Accuracy comes from the printed sheet and the checks the app runs — see how ScanScore avoids wrong marks.

Getting the best from a modest camera

  1. Wipe the lens. A smudged lens is the most common cause of a soft picture.
  2. Use even light. Daylight from a window, or room lights without a hard shadow across the sheet.
  3. Lay the sheet flat on a dark or plain surface, not curling at the edges.
  4. Keep the whole black frame visible with all four corner marks inside the picture.
  5. Hold steady for a moment. Cheap cameras take longer to focus; wait for the capture.

Battery and heat

Scanning keeps the camera and processor busy, so a long batch drains the battery faster than normal use. For a big marking session, start with a charged phone or plug it in. If the phone gets warm, give it a short break; a hot phone can slow down. Switching off apps you are not using helps on low-memory devices.

Shared and school phones

If several teachers share one device, keep each teacher’s exams separate by using their own class lists. Because marking needs no account, you can start without sign-in, though backup on a paid plan is worth considering for a phone that might be lost or reset.

If it will not scan well

  • The app tells you when a picture is unclear — fix light, flatness or distance first.
  • If one sheet keeps failing, it may be printed too light or cropped by the printer.
  • You can always review a paper and correct a mark by hand before saving.

There is a longer checklist in fixes when an OMR scan is not working.

No special phone, no special paper. If you can take a clear photo of a page, you can mark a class.
