“It saves time” is easy to say and hard to believe. So here is a way to check it with your own numbers rather than ours. Marking multiple-choice papers by hand follows a predictable pattern, and so does scanning. You can work out the difference in about a minute.

The sum

Time by hand per paper depends on the number of questions: you check each answer against the key, count, apply negative marking, write the total and enter it somewhere. Time by scan is about four seconds per sheet, plus moving paper.

Your numberHow to work it out
A. Seconds to mark one paper by handTime yourself on three papers and average
B. Seconds to scan one paperAbout 4, plus a few for swapping sheets
C. Papers per testClass size × classes
D. Tests per yearCount honestly
Hours saved a year(A − B) × C × D ÷ 3600

If your hand-marking takes, say, two minutes a paper, ten extra seconds of paper handling for a scan still leaves you far ahead — and you will not need to re-add anything.

It is not only the time

  • Fewer arithmetic slips. Totals and negative marking are done by the app.
  • No separate data entry. The result is already in a list, a rank and a CSV.
  • Insight you would not have time for. Per-question and per-section results come for free.
  • Re-marking is instant. If a key was wrong, correct it and results update.

Where manual still wins

  • Very small quizzes of a few papers and a few questions.
  • Written answers, working and diagrams — those need a teacher regardless.
  • The first time you set up an exam, which takes a minute or two.

What a batch looks like

In batch mode the camera captures as soon as the sheet is steady, then waits for it to leave the frame. You slide it away, lay the next down, and carry on. A class of forty is a matter of minutes, not an evening. See how to check MCQ answer sheets fast.

What you do with the time

The best argument is not the hours; it is what they are for. Time not spent adding up is time to read the question-level results, to see which topic the class missed, and to plan the next lesson around it. Subject-wise result analysis shows how.

Run your own test. Scan five papers, hand-mark the same five, and compare both the time and the scores. You will know in ten minutes.
