A private tutor’s marking day has no staff room, no photocopier budget and no one to hand the papers to. It is you, a phone, and the weekly test you promised parents would be returned on Monday. A free phone OMR scanner is a good fit for exactly this: nothing to buy, nothing to set up on a computer, and no limit to run into.
Why tutors benefit most
- No equipment cost. The scanner is the phone you already have.
- Flexible batches. Five students on Tuesday, twelve on Saturday — no scan count to watch.
- A professional result. A printed sheet with your name or centre on it, and a PDF report parents can read.
- Visible progress. Trends over weeks are the easiest way to show parents a tutor is working.
A weekly workflow that takes minutes
- Sunday: make the test (or have ScanScore write it), set the key, print the sheets.
- Test day: students fill the sheet, including their roll number.
- Straight after: scan each sheet while the student is still there and show them the score.
- Same evening: share each result by WhatsApp or export a PDF.

Tracking students across weeks
Add each student to a class once, with a roll number. After that every test files itself against that student, and you can look at their history instead of a pile of papers. The class breakdown shows which section or topic the whole group loses marks on, which tells you what to teach on Thursday.

Showing parents the result
Parents want two things: a number, and a sense that someone is paying attention. A WhatsApp message with the score is free; a PDF report with the trend over several tests is more convincing. On a paid plan a parent can also open their own child’s marks with a student code, but you do not need that to start.
When you grow
Many tutors become small centres. When you add a second teacher, you can move to an organisation so both of you see the same classes and results, with a seat per person. Until then, the free tool does everything a solo tutor needs. See class and organisation management.
